I.

A workshop that stayed small on purpose

Montegranaro is a town of eleven thousand people and several hundred shoemakers. Giuseppe grew up between them — his first job at sixteen was carrying lasts between two workshops on the same street.

When he opened his own door in 1999, he kept the operation deliberately small. Every pair still passes through the same set of hands: the leather is cut, the upper is lasted, the sole is stitched and the finish is built up by hand, one coat at a time.

It is slower. It is also the only way he is willing to put his name inside a shoe.

II.

Everything within a few kilometres

The Marche district is the reason Italian shoes are Italian shoes. The tanneries, the lastmakers, the sole suppliers and the finishers all sit within a short drive of each other, and most of them have worked with Giuseppe for two decades.

That proximity is not romance, it is quality control. A last that does not sit right goes back the same morning. A hide that came out of the drum a shade off never enters the cutting room.

It is also why nothing here is assembled somewhere cheaper and labelled here.

How a pair is made

Between the hide arriving and the box closing, a pair spends several weeks in the workshop. These are the five stages that decide how it will look after five years.

Selection

Full-grain calf chosen hide by hide. Only the tight-grained centre of the skin is used for the vamp.

Cutting

Each panel cut by hand so the grain runs with the shape of the foot, not against it.

Lasting

The upper is worked over the last and left to take its shape — the step that decides the line of the shoe.

Sole

Leather sole stitched, trimmed and edged so the shoe can be resoled rather than replaced.

Finish

Colour built up in thin coats and burnished by hand. No two pairs come out identical.
